Is becoming a Christian really supposed to be this hard?
I’m 20 years old. About 6 weeks ago I gave my life to Christ after reading the book "Save Me From Myself" by Brian Head Welch, the former lead guitarist for KoRn. His testimony has been a beacon of hope for my life and I wanted to be saved just like him.
I went on a spiritual high for a day and I thought everything was going to be fixed in my life. Boy was I wrong. Since then I had internalized emotional struggles with depression, anger, and guilt. I keep trying to assure myself that these emotions have no place in my life anymore and it’s a struggle to suppress them. I thought God was going to zap me with warm fuzzy feelings but I really think my demons are attacking me. I feel like past sins are being replayed in my mind to reinforce guilt and to make me feel I am not worthy of anybody’s love, especially God’s (even though that’s not true). I sometimes would get small panic attacks and feel frightened. I worry I will never get married and that I would never find a kind and supportive wife. If I get left alone or have nothing to distract me I get paranoid. Intense negative emotions seep into my mind whenever I’m not distracted by anything.
I find moments of peace when I pray, reflect on God’s Word, and think about God’s unfailing love and grace. Then I turn around and thoughts of despair and hopelessness attack my mind. I recall from Brian Head Welch’s book that he was physically attacked by demons for a week after giving his life to Christ. I’ve heard demons attack new Christians mercilessly if they are a threat to Satan’s agenda. While I’m not being physically attacked I think there is a spiritual struggle going on inside me. As a child, people told me that God must have enormous plans for me because I took a great interest in Him at a young age and have cared so much for people. I wonder if that makes me a target for Satanic advances, just like what happened to Brian Welch. However, Brian is now doing amazing ministries across the world and is shrinking Satan’s domain especially in the KoRn fanbase. I definitely see why the demons were trying to stop him from getting saved
So my question is this: What’s going on with me? Am I crazy and need medication or are there really Satanic forces trying to claim me? I know it sounds kinda silly but I’m dead serious. Am I the target of demonic attacks because of my new conversion and possibly my destiny?
To answer your question Stanton, Brian Welch found peace in God and overcame hopeless addictions to meth, pills, alcohol, sex, porn, and every other sin imaginable. After reading his story I said to myself "I want to know that kind of peace and love Brian now has through God. If he is now happy and living life despite his dark past why can’t I?"

You guys are really helping me and giving me hope and assurance that I will overcome this. Thank you, keep answering though.
Yes, what’s happening to you is normal. You’ve lived a life of sin for such a long time that the present occupants, aka demons don’t want to leave you alone. This is written in the bible and it happened to me. I even had a smile on my face reading what you wrote. You sound just like me when I gave myself to Christ.
But guess what, have no fear because you’ve been touch by God. You’ve been blessed to be a child of God. Soon you’ll see the rewards that come from total devotion to Jesus as Lord and Savior.
So, I welcome you into the life of the living Spirit. I recommend that you study the Holy Bible daily, pray, pray and pray and He will help you solve all and I mean all your problems. God’s promise is full of grace.

Evil is very real… stay close to your word (The Bible)
theone78 | Jul 05, 2009
Religion is bullsh!t. Find something real to enjoy in life and you will get more satisfaction that way.
Regarding your depression see a medical dr. There are a variety of pills on the market to deal with that. Depression is brought on by lack of serotonin which is produced in the back of the lower brain. Religion will not get rid of depression. All it will do is mask it.
God B(e). Less | Jul 05, 2009
No. If you’re suffering from depression and "demons," you should see a psychologist/psychiatrist immediately.
Wow, I advise someone who may have poor mental health to seek help, and people throw a fit. Figures.

Yes…..the demons will try to keep you from God.
Start reading the bible….it is God’s word to you. God will tell you what you need to know. Trust Him…God loves you and will complete the good work that He started in you.

When Satan loses a non-believer, he struggles hard to keep that person back. Continue to find moments of peace, but more frequently.
Good luck and God bless!!

You have it backwards hon. Following Christ will take your whole life and will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done. The Peace of the Lord is the peace that surpasseth all understanding. The peace that comes with knowing that in the NEXT world you will finally know peace.

Please see a minister about this. It’s too important to leave to a bunch of us on the internet. I think Satan’s warriors do try to win souls. Bear in mind he can’t take what you won’t give him. Please talk to a priest or minister. Norma

The Devil wants you back. It happens to everyone to the full extent of my knowledge.
I don’t know if you’re an athlete, but I compare it to a plank, or that part of the race when you’re neck and neck. It hurts deeper than anything else you could every know, but if you push harder, accept the fact that pain is part of the process, and center only on victory, you hit this nice plateau where the pain is shadowed by a colossal beast of self control, and you get the feeling that you are finally free from weakness. It’s literally an inch away from tribulation. Push through, don’t give in, cling to the unyielding rock of God, and you’ll be perfectly fine. You might even laugh at it later, if you’re that kind of person.
Frazizzle | Jul 05, 2009
Satan no longer has a hold on you so his going to do whatever he can to try to turn you back to him. God does not make anything hard in our life. His a good God and an Understanding God. Satan hates us for loving him so he wants to make our lives as hard as possible so we think and believe it’s God doing it. Stay close to your bible and ask God to help you to overcome this feelings that Satan is giving you, then believe he has.Your love for God and his word is your armor against Satan’s hold.

When you give your life to Christ it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
Why? everything you are used to doing you now don’t do
Read proverbs 26:11
11 As a dog returns to its vomit,
so a fool repeats his folly.
Welcome to detox.
It’ll get better, just stay strong and pray.

You are in spiritual warfare. You need to find other Christians to pray for you, and you need to be praying, and keep your faith. The enemy is trying to steal your soul. It’s not easy, I know many preachers make promises that life will be rosy as a Christian. Life can be better especially if you are spared from addictions etc like myself, so you need to remember that. But what makes our life easier is to look to eternal life, and set your sights on that, because then our suffering seems temporary, and insignificant. All of us have been through battles like this, just keep in mind that you are not worthy to begin with, so only by God’s grace, through your faith are you saved.
You can contact me if you need help.
Resist the devil and he will flee and find someone else that is weaker. He finds vulnerable people and attacks them.

There’s nothing wrong with you. No-one is deserving of God’s love, but he gives it to us anyway.
What you’re experiencing is perfectly normal, after spiritual highs there is usually a bit of a low. Pray, talk about it with your youth leader or pastor, they should be able to help you. The most important thing to remember is that you’re not alone. The christian walk is hard, but it isn’t a lonley one

Yes, being a born again believer makes you a target. Consider it a privledge that you are such a threat. Stay in His word with prayer and meditation. Watch who you hang with too, even "Christians".
And stay busy. The Bible says whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. Work, work, work.
BludBot | Jul 05, 2009
And your story is actually quite common amongst evangelicals the born again types. Its like life was ok, then you got saved and now you have to try and remind yourself you are not that bad. You could even spend way too much of your life wishing you felt like you did before you got ’saved’. peace of mind
go to a traditional ‘moderate’ church if you must and stay away from these recently spawned biblie only chrsitian cults. they covertly rob you of life. and this is known by a lot of people.
You are bound to find yourself one of the very few in these churches that is really trying and struggeling because most of them have managed to delude themselves a lot more by now.
there small minded us vs them mentality is designed also to becoming more and more dependant upon that church. You will start hearing how all the other christians are not true christians. they are seriously mad. do you speak in tongues yet?? Hopefully not. They will speak of invisible evil forces trying to attack you in your sleep. Its all done to work with your fears so as to make you more dedicated. Most if not all of the followers do not know they are doing this, they will be sincere about it thats for sure.

Yeah thats a demonic Mind Game. The battle is in the mind! Satan cannot influence your decisions without getting control over your way of thinking. When I first got babtized and gave my life to Christ the devil accused me of everything from being to self-centered to blasphemey. Satan cannot tell truth, only lies. He even influenced the Pharisees and they called Jesus himself a blasphemer! You must not listen or dwell on the things he wispers into your mind. This is all done to discourage you and your walk with God. Just like how before I was saved the girls wouldn’t really even look in my direction, but after I gave my life to Christ, I couldn’t keep the girls away from me! If the devil is bothering you, its only because you are doing something right. When the devil does this to you, that is when you pray and seek God even more. And the devil can use anyone to discourage you! Even people who go to your church! So do not be suprised if someone in the church rubs you the wrong way. Its all the work of the enemy. Anyone who has the potential to be a great spiritual warrior will be a priority for the devil. He doesn’t go after people who are not a threat.
Puma | Jul 05, 2009
This sometimes happens to me and I’ve been saved for about 12 years. I believe that the reason why Satan is trying to attack you is to try to keep you from getting closer to God. It still happens to me. Whenever you get close to God, Satan hates it and he will do everything he can to try to cause you to doubt or to be depressed, or anything like that. Satan certainly knows that you’re a threat to God and to help Him build up His kingdom, so Satan wants you to stumble to try to keep you from doing it. As for your future such as marriage, don’t worry about that right now. God knows what’s best for you and if you follow Him, He will bless you. Remember that His plan for your life is perfect. All you need to do is to follow Him.
stantonlogan | Jul 05, 2009
You are definitely more likely to get attacked in the spiritual realm after giving your life to Christ. Don’t listen to those who tell you you’re insane. Even though it’s not politically correct to acknowledge demonic activity in America, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. I recommend a book call "Knowledge of the Holy" by A.W. Tozer. This will help strengthen your faith and help you better understand the God who is now leading your life.

I remember well the *high* I had for several days after I gave my life to God/Jesus !!! Same with me as with you…. After a few days things began to go as *wrong* as wrong could be or go… God does NOT promise a perfect life here on earth, that comes when we *go home*, but He does promise He will stand with us and give us the strength to make it through and accomplish all that He has set before us to accomplish….. You said you find peace when *in the Word*, so I suggest strongly that you stay *in the word* as much as you can , pray as much as you can, and meditate on *good and Godly* things…. God will soon show unto you what, where and when…. go in peace….. God bless

So when you move closer to God, if there is a Devil ( I dont like to give him that much credit) … I guess he would get a little jealous and try to stop you. Makes sence right. Even if you look at it as a psychological warfare, You have to choose to be positive right. Well as you attempt to do that the negative is going to get louder and louder. Or it could just be God. It says he chastens those which he loves. You made a choice to be closer to him so he will make "crooked paths straight". I kind of just went through something similar with life changes and learning about God and I think you really just have to stick to it and keep reading.
I have read some books that tell you that you should arm yourself with Gods word, meaning find scriptures on what you are going through and meditate on them. The next time you feel under atttack you can just think of what God says about the situation and He can more easily pull you through.

Becoming a Christian was easy. Staying a Christian can be very hard, for Satan has lost you and now he is trying anything he can to get you back, and you are definitely a target. Jesus Himself was a target. It sounds like you are trying to do this alone, you can’t. Yes stay in God’s Word and stay in His face, but you also need to be in a church where you can be taught to fight spiritual warfare and you need mentors. This is a life commitment.
artthouwill | Jul 05, 2009
Of course Christianity is a challenge, and for people who think its not doesn’t know the spiritual warfare between good and evil that await you when you try to walk in the path of Christ. I converted myself since I was six and I reach all kinds of challenges and continuously. The more you try to do or live in Christ name, satan got something planned each and every time. I’m going through a situation I’m trying to overcome now. So you are not alone. We just got to read the bible, stay in the word, and pray. You are going to go through trails and tribulations but they don’t last always. Remember its a test from God, but can you past them??
Atrina | Jul 05, 2009
Satan absolutely hates it when someone is won over for the Lord. And yes, he will attack you and you can know that any fear you experience does NOT come from the Lord.
Second Timothy 1:7 says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
This assures us that any anxiety or panic in our lives comes from God’s enemies – Satan and his demons.
Fortunately for you – God is even greater than them.
First John 4:4 tells us, "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."
And with HIS strength and by His grace, you can overcome them. You can.
Philippians 4:13 assures you that you, "can do all things through Christ who strengthens (you.)"
Dig into the Word, my friend. Pray unceasingly. Repent of your sins.
First John 1:9 says,
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
You are clean in His sight. You are pardoned. You are not guilty. You are no longer a slave, you are a son or daughter of God.
Let it go as He has let it go – and resolve to do better, relying on His strength and His might.
Prayers are with you.
James 4:7
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

The "prince of darkness" wanders to and fro here on earth. He has been given a time to rule the very air we breathe and yes the angels that followed him to war against God are now his demons. They too have a great degree of freedom here on earth.
It is quite possible you are being set against but you are also a child of God. You are now one of the "elect" and we have been told that they would decieve us if they could.
You have access to powers stronger than the demons here, and you have the Holy Spirit to combat for you. You can’t do it yourself. Hence the reason for the "helper" the Christ Jesus sent in His stead until His return.
Do not despair, you’ve just gone through a major transition in your spirit and perhaps you were expecting too much.
The day I was baptized I turned to a friend and I said "what now"? his reply was "now you grow and mature". That was more than twenty years ago and trust me I feel just now that I’ve accomplished something through the Holy Spirit. To mature means you need time. So take your time in this pilgrimage and be patient. The Christ will come for you and God will be with you through everything you go through. There was no promise to take away the evil of the world but a promise to raise you as an "heir" to God’s kingdom but learning what is required takes time. It takes a lifetime.
I would like to quote you something from C.K. Chesterton.
" The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting: it has been found difficult and left untried".
This is true; do not find it so difficult that you would leave it untried. The thing about trying is that it takes a lifetime.
As the Lord Jesus once said "go with the peace of a dove but the wisdom of a serpent". (that was paraphrased but you get the idea)
So … go forth. Life isn’t easy and in this world it will get a lot tougher when people realize you are a Christian. They too will get harder on you and demand a perfection you simply don’t have. But they don’t have the faith that you do. Your job now is to serve and teach those who do not have your faith and that is a very hard thing to do.
It’s called love, and loving people you don’t like is not an easy task. Loving the people you do like is easier but they will make it a little more difficult for you because of your faith.
Take care; trust in God, have faith in the Christ and live by the workings of the Holy Spirit.
the old dog | Jul 05, 2009
Following Christ is and always will be a struggle. Look to the apostles for a great example. Thomas doubted Christ, Peter denied him three times, and they were all on the run for their entire lives which ended with them being put to death for their beliefs.
I’m sorry you were duped into thinking that once you have genuine faith, you will always be joyful and happy and never suffer, but that’s just not the way it is and I suggest you pull yourself away from that dangerous manner of thinking as fast as possible. That manner of thinking is straight from satan. It’s a trick. You’re supposed to think the struggle is supposed to end when faith comes so that when the struggle inevitable continues, your faith falters, wains, and disintigrates.
Only those who "persevere to the end will be saved". Faith is hard, not easy. It is a struggle, not a happy ride on a choo choo.
It is slightly possible, as was mentioned above, that you have Psychological issues that need dealing with, but I’ve heard this kind of thing several times before. It’s just a normal struggle with faith. Everybody with real faith goes through it. It is those who don’t struggle with their faith that you should be even more wary of than the outright non-believers. Do not let yourself be duped into that way of thinking. It will only make things worse. Just keep up the good fight and you’ll do good.
Farsight (The anti-Chris) | Jul 05, 2009
Just like I imagine Brian Welch dealed with when he converted….so you too have to deal with…
It is hard, I like to think of it in terms of drug addiction, when you first get off of the drug you usually fall a couple of times before you get better. That’s the first thing that you are told when going into rehab, that it is going to be hard, and you are going to screw up. But if you stick to it you will see the progress, just like a person who gets over their addictions. And for many like alcoholics, their entire life is battling against something that they always want and desire that is prevalent everywhere. But it’s all not hopeless you know? Because in the end its all worth fighting for, be it the alcoholic’s health and livelyhood, to the Christian who constantly battles sin…in the end it will be worth it.
But Pray to God and invoke Christ’s name if you really feel attacked. As He told his disciples they will all have power in His name…and perhaps God is allowing this to happen to you so that you may undergo deeper conversion, you are God’s gold being tested in fire…
JJ | Jul 05, 2009
this is normal. your letting go of your logic. your basically going against the flow of the natural world. your letting go of being human to follow something you cant even see under a microscope. its possible to be a good person without following a deity. its possible to turn your life around and not be under mythological rule. you seem like someone who just wants to be a better person and turn his life around, then do it. cuz in the end, there is no god, and you did it all on your own anyways!
THE GREAT ATHEISMO | Jul 05, 2009
No it’s not hard at all. You need to be baptized!
You’re not crazy and the Satan may well be trying to keep you away from God.
If you’ve truly given your life to Christ, you need to publically confess Him as the Son of God and Lord of your life. You need to be Baptized as soon as possible. Don’t put it off.
>>"Since then I had internalized emotional struggles with depression, anger, and guilt. I keep trying to assure myself that these emotions have no place in my life anymore and it’s a struggle to suppress them."<<
IF you have repented then be assured that those emotion truly have no place in your life. Forget about them and DO NOT go back. Repentance is to reconsider and turn from you sins.
Through baptism, which is symbolic of the death and resurrection of Christ. you leave your old nature in the grave and are born again (resurrected). Your life no longer being your own, you become dead to sin and the new lives for Christ, for you give your life to Jesus and from that point on everything you do should be as if you are doing it for Jesus. But this is not difficult for He says to those who take up His yoke, that it is light.
Get baptized in the name of Jesus and immerse yourself in His Word. Pray and fast and ask for the infilling and baptism of the Holy Spirit.
"Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?"
"Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. "
It is the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit which makes being a Christian easy and gives us comfort. Without the Holy Spirit, it becomes a struggle for it is not in our own power that we can do anything.
The Holy Spirit will also sustain you through a long fast if necessary and it is through prayer and fasting that the Devil can be rebuked.
Read Mat 17:18 -21.
EDIT: btw if you read the NIV, get rid of it and get a real bible. You will not find the most important verse in spiritual warfare in the NIV other than in a small footnote which can be easily missed.
"Mat 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. "

Here is my view:
"I went on a spiritual high for a day and I thought everything was going to be fixed in my life."
I don’t know what kind of experience you had, but it could be from God as well as from demons.
Whatever it was you should often pray to God, go to Church and confess.

"Since then I had internalized emotional struggles with depression, anger, and guilt. I keep trying to assure myself that these emotions have no place in my life anymore and it’s a struggle to suppress them."
You have to calm down and lower the speed that your mind evaluates your (and any) situation to avoid errors. You must start from the basics. Forget whatever you have in mind and focus on some basic facts:
1) You are alive and living in a planet full of beauty. All of these are great gifts given by God and perhaps you need to take some time to consider and evaluate them.
2) God does not take these gifts back from you, so He believes that you have more to offer and to achieve.
3) The problems that you have right now are not gonna totally go away in one day. You need to give yourself much more time to solve those than 3-4 days. Just try to relax and ignore your current problems by having faith in God who is always next to you and that will help you out gradually. For any bad actions you may have done you can always find a way to pay back for the problems you created.
There are satanic forces trying to claim us all, not only you.
You should start praying to God as more often as you can.
You should speak to Him as your best friend because He is.
You are carrying your own cross which is your problems. You should pray to God to help you bare it and have faith in God and His mercy.
God forgives you no matter what you ‘ve done. You just have to become humble and forgive yourself. Pride prevents you from forgiving yourself. We humans cannot do anything right without God – that’s why you made so many mistakes: you were on your own. Now you have a chance to make a new start with Him on your side. You won’t become a saint in a week. You have to try very hard for that and very insistently. The longest the fight you give for it, the strongest faith and peace you get. Miraculous things don’t happen in a day, as you may have read.

"I sometimes would get small panic attacks and feel frightened. I worry I will never get married and that I would never find a kind and supportive wife. If I get left alone or have nothing to distract me I get paranoid. Intense negative emotions seep into my mind whenever I’m not distracted by anything."
If by saying "feel frightened" you you mean so much frightened like you are about to die, then I guess this could be an attack by demons. Generally, the description matches with an attack like this.
You cannot know what your your future will be, but whatever that is it will be for the best if you trust God and do His will.
Again, you should often pray to God, go to Church and confess.
——————-
" Am I the target of demonic attacks because of my new conversion and possibly my destiny?"
Your only destiny is to accept God’s help and let Him lead you were He wants. Alone you can do nothing (none of us can). Whatever you achieve would be with the help of God and to take this help you should cast out any pride (or big ideas) you may have about yourself.
Also reading the New Testament may help you become more peaceful.
——————-
"Is becoming a Christian really supposed to be this hard?"
Yes it is.
Christ said:
"Take your cross and follow me".
That speaks for itself…

Oh boy. Where to begin. I believe in God and Christ. But the notion of demons preying on you is false. It comes from a small segment of Christians
