Igby Goes Down
Igby Goes Down (2002)

IMDB rating: 7.10

Plot: Igby Slocumb, a rebellious and sarcastic seventeen year-old boy, is at war with the oppressive world of his East Coast “old money” family. With a schizophrenic father, a self-absorbed, distant mother, and a shark-like young Republican big brother, Igby figures there must be a better life out there, and he sets out to find it. After happily flunking out of several Prep Schools, Igby escapes into the bohemian underworld of Manhattan. His darkly comic trip—shared by a deviant cast of characters, including his terminally bored, part-time lover Sookie, his Godfather’s trophy mistress Rachel, and smack-dealing performance artists Russel—veers from bizarre to tragic in Igby’s ultimately noble attempt to keep himself from “going down.”

A quote about freedom and or running away?
Perchance a thought provoking lyric for an essay for school. It is mostly like Igby Goes Down, but I can;t find a quote from that movie with out the F word in it, and I prefer lyrics anyways. Thanks.

I like this one:

Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
‘Cause there’s a million things to be
You know that there are

What is the difference between a German Shepherd and a White German Shepherd?
I know that there are kennel restrictions on the White German Shepherd regarding shows, but I want to know if there are any differences between the White breed and the "normal" breed (apart from the fact that they are differently colored). Are they separate breeds? What are the differences between the two breeds?

the white one doesn’t have to sit in the back of the bus

big joe | Aug 19, 2009

White German Shepherds and German Shepherds are the same breed, only White ones have genetics that make them white. People often consider them different breeds because of that, they try to keep white ones breeding with white ones to get more white ones. No difference, only their color is different.
L | Aug 19, 2009

AKC standards do not acknowledge "white" as a color for the german shepherd dog. A white german shepherd is simply a substandard color of the german shepherd and is not its own breed as many think.
durdenslabs | Aug 19, 2009

Colour that is all.
Maxi | Aug 19, 2009

LOL @ big joe!

There isn’t a difference between the two aside from color. Contrary to popular belief, white GSDs do not suffer from health issues due to their color. The AKC really needs to recognize this and adjust their breed standard.
Dd (is on vacation) | Aug 19, 2009

They are the same breed. Just the color.
Eno | Aug 19, 2009

Nothing really – its just that the breeders don’t like white Shepherd and therefore, it was not an accepted color in the breed standard.

Personally I think they are cool looking and maybe one day they will be accepted.
Ocimom | Aug 19, 2009

White GSDs have been bred for color over temperament, conformation, and working ability…most of them have softer temperaments that a standard GSD, and very few of them can work. You will never see one doing protection/police work.

Sure, there are plenty of poorly bred "normal" colored GSDs out there with soft, sharp/shy temperaments and no working ability…however if you get a white one, your virtually guaranteed of this (even if you get one from an ethical breeder).
Loki ? Wolfchild | Aug 19, 2009

In the German Shepherd the white is caused by a masking gene which is why they have dark nose, eye rims, etc.

In Europe they are separate breeds and there are some here in the states that would like to separate the white coated GSD from the others.

Contrary to what someone else said, there are great white GSDs out there. You do not see as many working but you also don’t see American Line GSDs working either.

I have seen pictures of white GSDs in Schutzhund – and doing quite well at it. There are white GSD breeders out there that are doing all the right things – they are harder to find though.

ETA- I meant masking gene in the sense that it masks the color from showing not masking as in their dark face
Barb | Aug 19, 2009

[Barb]:
There is NO "masking gene" involved in self-white. Join my group (address below) or Danielle’s http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/GSD_G enetics to do some learning.
The true "masking allele" is E^m, the one that produces a dark mask on many breeds. To be self-white, a pooch of any canine breed must be e^ e^ (to block the production of eumelanin (dark pigment)), so cannot posses E^m. It must also be homozygous for one of the 2 recessives that block the production of phaeomelanin (tan pigment).

[Dd (is on vacation)]:
Despite the AKC’s own arrogant opinion, the Standard of the GSD has NOTHING to do with the AKC – the GSD is NOT a Yank breed (although the NAmerican Ski-Slope Dogs that masquerade as GSDs in AKC & CKC rings sure are Yank & Canuck deviations).
And although fanciers of white will never accept it, the FACT is that there is NO HERDING BREED that is white. Every herding breed (and not all dogs translated as "Shepherd" are herding dogs – many, such as the Anatolian, are guarding dogs) is required to have a contrasty coat, with a dark area on top. The 2 most obvious reasons are that sheep don’t respect/fear white dogs the way they do dark dogs, and a yellow-white dog is hard for the farmer to see as it walks among the sheep (which is why the guardian breeds ARE usually yellow-white & woolly – the predator thinks the guardian dog is just a stupid sheep, which gives the dog a better chance to get close enough to catch it).

[confused]:
It depends on WHICH GSD and WHICH white GSD you are talking about.

To make it a little easier, let’s consider a litter with both white and non-white pups in it.
Okay, obviously the genetics are close to the same in both sets of pups, although random mixing during the meiosis stage that produces gametes (sperm, ova) plus random chance as to which sperm fertilises which ovum makes it immensely improbable that any 2 pups are actually genetically identical.
The key difference is that the white pups have a pair of both sets of "blocker" alleles – they are homozygous for the e^ that blocks eumelanin, and homozygous for either a^ or the as-yet-unidentified other allele that blocks phaeomelanin (some of us us have been calling it c^d just to give it a name, although DNA research has since proven that the C locus has the wrong chemistry to do that particular blocking). Whereas the non-white pups have avoided the full set of 4 alleles (2 pairs), but are very likely to have at least one of the set.

No damage has been identified as caused by either of those "blocking" alleles, nor has any damaging allele been identified as closely linked to either of them (unlike blues, where there is associated organ damage in some breeds, though not in GSDs. But some versions of the 2 pairs of alleles that create self-blue GSDs do seem to produce brittle ear-hairs that rub off between moults).

The Godfather (Part I, II, III) Nino Rota Original Score… Where is it?!?
I’ve looked a while now, and i cannot find the ORIGINAL score. All of the soundtracks have been performed by a non-Nino Rota orchestra… is there a original soundtrack or was the original score lost years ago, if it was lost that would be a horrific blow to the world of music…
yes, i know, sad. But I looked at the reviews of all the Godfather I on amazon and everyone is saying its not originally his…

Nino Rota only wrote the music for Godfather Parts I and II. Unfortunately, Rota died before Godfather III was made. Both original soundtracks are available for Godfather Parts I and II on Amazon.

A great blocker and a fantastic recieving Tight End. He has been passed by many teams including the Eagles (in this Mock), and he is coming off the board here to a team that needs a TE for their young star Quarterback Matt Ryan.

Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State.

why is blackfriday with black?

why is black fridays have black in it???

I believe you are asking about the origin of the phrase, "black Friday?" Well this day is traditionally when merchants have their books go in the black. Which means they finally begin making a profit after the large amount of sales made on this day.
Beth | Nov 27, 2009

It stems from accounting when you are in the black shows you are generating revenue. When you are in the red it shows negative revenue. Since most stores experience a tremendous amount of sales on this one day is called Black Friday.

Shure makes the best
you will probably have to go to a music store to find them

Sony is good for the inexpensive ones

byrde94 | Nov 08, 2009

Logitech – Don’t go there.

JVC – Again, not so good.

Apple – Average, but overpriced for what they do.

I generally use Sony earphones, these ones cost about ?11, which is very cheap for the quality you get from them. After buying these, I would never go for any other store bought brands. The quality is just amazing. I bought these after my Apple iPod headphones started crackling, and I couldn’t believe the difference. They’re also a lot more comfortable in my opinion. Here’s a link (This just happens to be pink, they do other colours): http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog ?hl=en&q=sony+earphones&cid=7343 938409144464987&sa=title#p

The only thing better than these would be Bose, although their in ear ones are probably on a similar standard as the Sony ones.

Are You Cooking Now?

Whew! I got home from work at around 5 pm…thankfully, all my grown children and two of my grandchildren PLUS my ex-hubby participate in the Thanksgiving cooking of the dinner!

My son improved on my mac and cheese recipe and now he is the extradinaire one…and my daughter in law bakes plus makes my mom’s recipe of my Dad’s fav sweet potato souffle…my daughters fix the mashed potatoes, dressing, salad, pies and green beans…and my ex does the deep fried turkey and ham. I have the task of the southern style greens [kale and collard mix]

Everbody wants enough food to have doggie bags to take home!

SO I have just finished 6 lbs of fresh greens and they are on the stove and I am tired! LOL – and if you have ever done greens, you know what the cleaning, desteming and washing is all about! LOL

So what are you cooking?
ALL of you are such GEMS! – yes, I’m taking time for self…have my evening dinner on to cook now…a pork chop and a baked sweet potato! YUM!

I hope all of you, regardless of circumstance have a wonderful day tomorrow :-)

PS Volunteering is a good thing…I did it for years on the National Mall in DC feeding the homeless and it always felt so good and was such a happy time.
My greens are done are in the fridge..I’ve had my dinner and am now going ‘prone’ in front of the boob tube…regardless of what you do, please be grateful for whatever you have [Hey, we're above ground! lol] and know that somebody, somewhere thinks you very special in their lives.

I love ya! one and all!

Please! Oh Pleeeezze… Send some of those greens my way! You’ve gone and made me way hungry.

Seriously the greens sound wonderful… I’m doing a steamed broccoli salad with honey and oyster-flavored-sauce dressing plus a venison salami hors d’oeuvre plate.

The wife has her mince pie done, the candied sweet potatoes in the oven and her infamous cranberry meatballs are marinading in the cranberry sauce dressing.

We are going to my brother’s home and will spend the holiday with both our daughters and our pregnant grand-daughter for the first time in years (the daughters I mean).

To all on here… I wish you abundance!

Chaplain John | Nov 21, 2007

My contribution is buying a large portion of the food and the others cook and clean. It really works out well for me.

Happy Thanksgiving!
ncgrl | Nov 21, 2007

Wow. You are busy. Take some time to relax too. But your meals sound so delicious. I will have to get a site with some of these lovely Southern Recipes..
Remember to look after "you" as well. And enjoy it it.:)
justme | Nov 21, 2007

Gosh it all sounds FABULOUS! And though you have the tough prep I’m sure you’re thankful you don’t have to do it all!

I don’t have to cook a thing. Volunteering at the rescue mission tomorrow then to friends home who said don’t bring a thing except a bottle of wine….I’m taking them up on it and bringing 2!

Have a great time!

Not no, but hell no! This is the first year I have not cooked for a hoard..tomorrow, I am picking up dinner at a very good deli, bringing the turkey and all home, warming it and serving it….and I am NOT going to clean up…the maids can do it on Friday morning… Call me lazy….fine! But I am over the entire thing of spending the entire day in the kitchen then doing all the clean up while veryone else is having fun…to hell with that! Phil and , Happy happy thanksgiving.
goldwing | Nov 21, 2007

Wow, you have alot of chefs on your side. I made pie yesterday night and will wake up early to get that bird into the oven. Even though I have kids, I think I will be alone in the kitchen, which is fine, as I really don’t usually cook. I love to take credit for the good dinner. Guess who has to wash up the dishes lol. This year I’m going to my brother’s house for Thanksgiving Dinner. He’s marring in January after 10 yrs of Harley riding Airplane building and partying, he’s 55 and he’s finally grown up! I’m only taking dressing, sweet potato casserole, green beans from my garden and banana pudding. I usually cook for two days….and it’s over in 2 hours. Traditions are losing importance. now that the little folks are all grown up.
Everyone seems too busy to really enjoy it.
Bah-Humbug! :) Juju

My daughter got here earlier and I was making a homemade pumpkin pie and pepperoni rolls. We are going out to eat tomorrow with family, so no one has to do a bunch of cooking and cleaning up. It’s a tradition we started years ago and we love it, this way we get to enjoy the time we have together.
I hope you and your family have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
luvspbr2 | Nov 21, 2007

Got one round of yeast rolls done. Two more batches tomorrow morning and it’s all done.

Been invited to two separate dinners tomorrow and am planning on gaining the 5 lbs. I just lost. Oh, well!

Joy and many blessings for Thanksgiving, have a great one!
Cranky | Nov 22, 2007

Oh! I wish I could sample your greens!

I cooked yesterday, from 1:00 until 11:30 last night. I’ll begin again in about an hour.

Roasted two 20 lb turkeys. Deboned one, and will do the other this morning….then I need to reheat the pans in the oven.

Peeled, boiled, mashed 15 pounds of yukon gold potatos.

Made the stock for my giblet gravy; used the turkey necks, veggies, fresh herbs, and pan drippings. Sauteed the giblets. Will finish off the gravy this morning.

I’m STILL tired…LOL

LDS polygny question?

In reading this question here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index; _ylt=AtvfUEvaoigZfGPSqH35otcjzKIX;_ylv=3 ?qid=20090123094249AADB5He I found lots of interesting answers. Most of them revolved around not being able to share our spouses with another, or just not worrying about it until the time comes.

I’m curious about the ‘not being able to share’ answers, how do you feel about modern day polyamorous people? I’m not talking about the FLDS or any other ‘forced’ polygamy type situations involving children or anything currently illegal, but consenting adults who choose to live a polygamous lifestyle either polygynous or polyandrous.

It is infidelity.

Every married person vows to be faithful in this country. Once that vow is broken, the marriage is over. The only reason to break the vow is if you no longer want your spouse as your soul mate.

My great grandmother was born into polygamy in the LDS church. The stories she told were horrifying. They very much match what is written by women who escape FLDS polygamy.

Polygamy attracts greedy men. It attracts submissive women who can’t protect their own kids.

The evils are inherent in the system.

If you don’t want to be faithful, please don’t marry or have kids.

It’s not my lifestyle choice. It can’t work unless everyone involved is completely fine with it, like open relationships can’t work unless both people are all for it. If not, eventually a woman (could be the man, but most likely a woman) will want to be monogamous, or feel like something is missing in her life, and the marriage/open relationship won’t work.
