Can anyone recommend a good musical for me?
My favourites are Spring Awakening, Sweeney Todd, and Les Miserables. I wasn’t a huge fan of Cats, or Rent. I enjoyed The Lion King, The Producers, and The Phantom of the Opera but they are not among my favourites.

Please don’t recommend Wicked.

Thanks for your time!

Fiddler on the Roof, Miss Saigon, Avenue Q, Once On This Island and The Fantastiks. Spring Awakening is definitely one of the best out there.

Go rent the movie west side story. Or try renting out High School Musical 1, 2, 3. As for me I prefer the Movie Being John Malkovich. Now that was awesome!
deprogramer | Feb 03, 2010

Wizard of Oz.Horseman on the Roof is a movie but it is pretty good like Les Miserables.
Marie | Feb 03, 2010

‘In the Heights!’ is supposed to be great and sounds a bit like what you like. You may also want to check ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ (Somewhat similar to ‘The Producers’) or ‘West Side Story’ (Similar to what you mentioned) out. ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ and ‘West Side Story’ are also in movie form. I’m %99 sure all of these are on Broadway now.

‘Avenue Q’ is also really funny like ‘The Producers.’

I am really surprised no one has recommended Jekyll and Hyde. The music is epic and dark just like Sweeny Todd and Les Mis.

My friend has a gas problem…please help-she's danger to society and me as well?
I’ve met her two weeks ago at the museum and it didn’t take long until we’ve become inseparate. But I also noticed that she has a problem that is farthing.I know it is a natural thing and of course people can farth now and then but with her it is like every 3 min. It’s not only the noisy ones but those that are silent and deadly. So I thought ;noone’s perfect and I invited her to my house so we could watch a movie and also had dinner:but she started to farth at the table!!!Now that’s something I can’t stand,I couldn’t enjoy my pasta carbonara!I don’t know how to tell her to errr…. watch a bit, because I shouldn’t be telling her anything right?it’s not like she’s a kid that I have to explain to her that farthing in public isn’t nice.Oh dear what should I do?

what is farthing?

if you really cant bear it then the only thing you can do is tell her. she may some kind of problem with her system so be careful about how you approach the subject, but im sure she’d feel much better if she could explain to you WHY she does it. however, given the fact that she openly farts a lot i shouldn’t think she’d be too embarrassed if you ask her anyway, so just go a head and ask why. if its a problem, accept it. if its just because shes a bit gross, ask her if she’l kindly refrain from farting so much whilst shes around you. good luck!

First off I don’t see the Bengals going 11-5. Second how in heck are the Jets going 8-8? We did make it to the AFC championship if I remember correctly. Sanchez is maturing, Washington and Jenkins back from injury, and the emergence of a star in Shonn Greene! Did I mention we had the #1 defense in the NFL? And lastly The Pats are WAY overrated. They got demolished by the Ravens at home. Brady getting old, defense not looking too great, and a meteoker at best running game. Pats will not be good next year.

And have you seen the Steelers this year? They were supposed to be a playoff contender this year and the didn’t make it. Its early but……

North
Ravens- they will take it next year
Steelers- They will be good, but not that good
Browns- They will improve to mediocracy
Bengals- Slouchers that will fail

East
Jets- It annoys me to predict them to be in first
Dolphins- I’m not biased
Pats- They will drop to mediocracy
Bills- They’re doomed

West-
Chargers- This will be the year for them to go downhill, this division will be close
Chiefs- New coaches help sometimes
Broncos- Dawkins misses Philly
Raiders- they will start russel again

South
Titans- they will be the best team in the league next year
Colts- They got Manning, nuff said
Houston- Very good taem, very hard division
Jags- they’re fans don’t even care anymore
Prisoner | Feb 05, 2010

AFC North- I can agree that the Steelers should win it, but only with 11 or 12 wins. I don’t think that there will be 3 10 win teams in the division however. The steelers may be the only ones

AFC East- The Patriots are overrated, and will not win 12 games. I like 8-8 and 7-9 for the next two teams, but I’d switch and put the Dolphins ahead of the Jets. Jets fans will cry foul, but they can’t deny the Jets backed into the playoffs. They did make some noise when they got there, but only giving them a lower position in the draft. If next season is uncapped, it makes free agency that much harder for them. And for the guy that pointed out that the Jets are getting key players back from IR, the Dolphins lost more starters to injury than the Jets.

Pats still win the division, but as an 11 win team.

AFC West- I know its stupid seeing as both these teams suck, but I think the Chiefs will win more games than the Raiders. From watching the last few games, they seem to be heading in the right direction. Meanwhile in Oakland, they are still hiring a coaching staff around a head coach who still doesn’t know if the job is still his. The Chargers are still the best in the West, and the Broncos have almost no choice but to be #2.

AFC South- I agree completely.
Oma | Feb 05, 2010

Why the hell do you have the Chiefs going 2-14? We have one of the best RBs in the league, an actual OC who doesn’t call a wideout screen every other play, and defensively we will be playing with an actually healthy LB corps. Last year, we were missing two of our starters. I would put the Chiefs (barring injury and depending on how we do in the draft/free agency) around 6-10 or even 8-8. I know we won’t be a playoff team for another couple of years, but I think we’re improving and that’s what is important

The Art of Being Straight (2008)

Plot: John thinks he’s got it all figured out. He’s young, good looking and has always had a way with the ladies. After a break-up with his girlfriend, he moves west to Los Angeles for a fresh start. He is officially back on the market and looking to score. Crashing on his buddy Andy’s couch is a comforting return to the college patterns of partying, womanizing and trash talk with the guys. However, reconnecting with his old flame Maddie proves to be surprising when she introduces him to her girlfriend, Anna. An aspiring photographer, John takes an entry-level position at an ad agency, determined to prove himself. Things get a little confusing when Paul, a successful executive at the firm, takes a special interest in John, and when John ends up in Paul’s bed, his world is turned completely upside down. The Art of Being Straight explores one man’s unexpected search for identity. More than just a story of seduction, John’s journey to find himself proves to be almost more than he can handle, yet he discovers that accepting the unknown also brings unlimited possibilities.

just jiu jitsu or mma?
im almost 16 and am interested in learning martial arts, i am more into jiu jitsu because it has a lot of take downs and body manipulation, but i also want to be able to strike, should i find an mma gym or look for just straight jiu jitsu?

I’m in a BJJ, MMA gym, and for me, its like this.

If you plan on competing in MMA fights, then go mma all the way. Same thing for self defense, mma will teach you how to defend yourself in any situation (without weapons of course.)

BJJ is extremely fun though, getting to wear the gi, learning the judo throws, different controls, its all fun. Competing in BJJ tournaments is also great. My gym competes at NAGA about 3 times a year.
BJJ will also help you with self defense as well, most people don’t realize that unlike mma (where fighters are sweaty, no shirt, and shorts) BJJ gi’s allow you to learn to control an opponent that is actually wearing clothes (like most fights)

Both will teach you self defense, but it either comes down to competing or your personal preference.

MMA=fighting-punching, kicking, takedowns, submissions (fun)
BJJ=Submissions, gi’s, throws, ground (fun)

This Guy | Feb 01, 2010

Thats a personal decision…if you want to be able to strike, go MMA. If not, stay with just JJ
mbw | Feb 01, 2010

well first jiu jitsu doesnt have takedowns really, they kinda just steal them from judo and once you get on the floor then you start making magic. For mma jiu jitsu is a very helpful base martial art, then you can get in on some kickboxing or muy thai. Many dojos that i know offer some mma classes even though they are technically a jiu jitsu dojo. but ultimately do whichever you enjoy most

all assuming you mean Brazilian jiu jitsu
Mike C | Feb 01, 2010

Mike C is wrong sport BJJ does have takedowns stolen or not they are part of BJJ. Most gyms that teach mma also teach BJJ.
Ned | Feb 01, 2010

MMA. That will be a good foundational place to start that will give you a lot of exposure to beginners jiu jitsu. If you want to specialize in jiu jitsu as you progress, you could certainly do that.
E Honda | Feb 01, 2010

Most MMA gyms offer BJJ. If you can find an MMA gym that offers jujutsu, all the more better, because jujutsu is half the game in becoming a good well rounded fighter. Mine offers japanese jujutsu, so we don’t really learn BJJ at ours.
Keyboard Warrior | Feb 01, 2010

find an MMA gym. 99% of brazilian jiu jitsu gyms also offer, striking usually muay thai.

By Training at a legitimate MMA gym you’ll be training, and learning the styles of Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, and so on. And you’ll also be training with other highly qualified individuals and professional fighters, which will sky rocket your skills.
janderson1229 | Feb 02, 2010

japanese ju jitsu.
aboriginal | Feb 02, 2010

A Brazillian Jiujitsu dojo probably will have striking. I would check out the BJJ school first and ask them if they have striking. If they don’t, and it’s just straight sport BJJ without strikes, then check out a MMA gym.

The MMA gyms I have seen have BJJ classes. You can participate in the BJJ and the MMA striking classes also. They allowed the option of training in MMA but, you don’t have to compete in MMA. If you just want to compete in BJJ tournaments they usually just allowed that. So, if your MMA gyms are like my area then a MMA gym will have all you need.

But, it’s better to go check out the BJJ school first. Their strikes will be more specifically designed for BJJ and more street self-defense orietnted than MMA’s strikes. I would go with MMA as a plan B.

Familiar Strangers
Familiar Strangers (2008)

IMDB rating: 6.00

Plot: “Familiar Strangers” asks the question. “Is it really possible to relate to ones parents and siblings after being replaced by the family dog? . . . Perhaps as friends – weird friends?” An off beat – funny – heartfelt story of family negotiating the changing relationships between parents and children, especially as those children grow into adulthood.

Directors: Adler Zackary

Actors: Hatosy Shawn,Qualls DJ,Bower Tom,Murray Kevin,Sutherland Angus,Woodard Keith,Rough William,Cupp Dennis,Jenkins Chris,Joy Mark,Comedy,Drama,

Is it normal that I have been sort of spying on this guy for the past several months?
I’m a college freshmen in a community college – So unlike a full size university you see a lot familiar faces on a day to day basis. Now I’m a guy and I’m straight, why I have my eyes on this guy you may wonder? Well first off, I am shy, I’m 18 and I want to talk to him. He’s a goth/sorta emo dude, but he looks shy to so it’s like the kinda ‘chemistry’ you have between friends…

its like an invisible force that draws me to him, i can’t help but notice him every time i walk by him in the hall way or see him in the cafe often alone. I have seen him with people on a few occassions but he doesn’t seem to be a social outgoing type of guy if you know what i mean, even in groups he seems quiet.

So everytime i see him its like pain inside of my body because im to shy to talk to him, plus hes goth and im not- it probaly wouldnt be a good math for friends, but the desire within me is just killin me even if he’s not the guy i think he is, my curiousity is high i rlly do want to find out about him and talk to him and if i dont like him as a person, i can let it off my chest and move on.

when your surrounded by a pool of lemons all of which seem to be the same and i see a lotta lemons, he’s like an apple. he looks different, he looks unique, and it’s that distinct look, that keys me to say – maybe he’s an interesting unique kinda guy to know, he seems cool.

ya know i really wish i could talk to him, but i have issues with myself and how i look. plus ive never really been good talking to new people i dont really know how to start conversations with strangers in public.

Wow, just go up to him and start talking, if your too shy then just leave him alone.
F0r3v3r L0v3d | Dec 07, 2009

so let me get this straight..you just wanna get to know him as a friend? it’s perfectly normal then to feel a sort of instinctive attraction to someone, be it a love kind or a friendship kind. I totally can relate to this because even though you don’t know the person or not much about them, I believe there’s a stronger force, an instinct of sort, that attracts you to that person, maybe because you share things in common or maybe because it is the type of person you would like to be or just maybe, like you said, is an "apple", someone whose personality/character attracts you to them, it is an interesting phenomenon that cannot always be explained but it is just there and powerful. So, to get back to the question, this instinct you have is there for a reason, it is telling you something. You should befriend him, just casually go over and when he is alone or sit close by and try to make small talk, like ask him a question or something and start a conversation. But yeah, I definetely know what you mean :) good luck

For any adoptees who've lost an adoptive parent to death…?
I am raising my 28 months old son who is adopted by myself now that his adoptive dad passed away December 22. I’m also reuniting with his first parents, and his first dad wants to be part of his life and do the "man" thing with him, and I’m open to him being with them more in the future.

I’m torn between keeping the memory of his "Daddy" who has been there every step of the way, and who was the world’s best father, loving him and being a hands on dad. Is the loss of an adoptive parent different than the loss of a biological one? Will he remember the daddy who took care of him so greatly, or will he move more towards his biological one. His daddy’s death was very sudden after working a 10 hour day, he passed quietly in his sleep. He was working out of town for the first night when he passed.

I lost my adoptive father when I was still a kid. I miss him terribly but nothing will take away the memories and shared history we had.

Loving him and keeping his memory doesn’t stop me from loving other people, including my natural family. I’m sure your son will grow close to his father, he is a huge part of him and it’s wonderful that he will be able to grow up with the genetic mirroring that so often gets dismissed as unimportant.

It’s gonna be alright :)

I lost my Amom in 2004. It was devastating. I think if you love someone, truly do, the pain is just as bad, even if there are no bonds of blood. On the day of her death and her birthday, i always cry.
Lady Rowan | Jan 19, 2010

I was much older when I lost my amom, but very much still a child at 14. The loss was more intense initially since I had been raised by her but looking back 18 years later they were similar in many ways. For many years I thought my abandonment issues were a direct result of my amoms death, now I see it was the combined loss that started with the loss of my natural mother at birth and grew with the death of my adoptive mother. Shortly after my amom passed I created a fantasy, a life lie if you will, to provide some relief from being left motherless twice in my short life. In my mind I concocted a natural mother, many siblings and an entire extended family, I told everyone I knew that I was in reunion and started using a name I gave myself but told people was what this fake mother had wanted to call me. I went so far as taking baby photos of myself and passing them off as my sisters while taking photos of my adoptive brother to say they were my brothers. I carried out this twisted fantasy until I was 20 and actually did find myself in reunion. Obviously your son will have no reason to go to such extremes as he will have knowledge of where he came from but I think my story demonstrates how a child can quickly replace reality with fantasy in a desperate bid to cope with loss they can not comprehend. At 28 months he is probably not really aware of what has happened, just that his daddy hasn’t come home but I suspect the emotions are similar in that even understanding what happened you don’t fully understand how it is affecting you as a child. I’m sure many people have told you all the things you should watch out for and how best to help him cope with his loss so I won’t bother :-)

The day of my amom’s memorial marked the last time I was able to actually talk about her. Her family shut me out after that and I haven’t spoken with any of them more than a handful of times since. This was the single most isolating part of the experience. If at all possible try to keep your husband’s family involved. Also my adad moved on very quickly after my amom’s death, moving us into a new home with a new woman less than 6 months later, marrying her 4 months after that. This created confusion for me and left me feeling like I wasn’t suppose to remember my mom. I doubt you will go that route but keep in mind that your son isn’t able to understand who his ndad is or what the relationship is or should be between them. For quite a while I would keep it light and avoid using the term Dad.

As far as him remembering his father I hate to say it but he likely won’t. He is very young and even thought I was 14 I have lost almost all of my memories of my amom, the first time I realized I could no longer remember the sound of her voice cut me to the core but it is to be expected. Memories fade and very few people have solid memories from their toddlerhood at all. The best thing you can do is keep his memory alive through stories, photos and videos if you have them. My girls don’t know their brother but they do know his memory through my memories and my eldest tells me that is very powerful and helps her feel a bit connected with a brother she has never met and possibly never will.

Again I am very sorry for you loss.

I am adopted, and I personally think that if I had lost either of my adoptive parents, growing up, I would have been devastated. Keep the memory alive of your husband, and allow your son to have a male figure in his life. He will know he was doubly loved. :)

Having only lost my adad, I can’t yet say whether it’s as ‘bad’ to lose an aparent as it is to lose a bparent, but my theory is that losing anyone you care about is going to leave a that-person-shaped hole in your soul, and there is no easier or harder if you love them.

I’d say let him have the relationship with bdad (heck, I’d say that even if your partner hadn’t died), as that should be entirely separate from the relationship he had with his adad anyway.

People aren’t interchangeable!

I lost my Adad when I was 18, suddenly as well from a heart attack. I can’t say from personal experience that it was different than losing a bio-parent since I don’t know mine. But I can say that I didn’t think anything like "My adoptive father is dead", I thought "My dad is dead".

I would do both with your son. He will remember his dad, and he should. But also, he can benefit from having his bio-dad there for him. It’s nothing you need to be torn between.

And I’m so sorry you lost your husband.

I haven’t any experience of what you’re going through so only answer from personal experience of relatives dying. One of my great grandmothers died when I was very young as did some great uncles and aunt. What has helped me to remember them are photographs and stories that my parents told me over the years. The key to this is being able to keep the happy memories of "Daddy" alive and keeping relationships in the order that they have been. Your son’s adoptive dad will always be his dad, first dad is his other dad who hasn’t raised him but wants to be part of his life. Boys do need a dad or a male figure in their lives.
